RELEASE 7 FEBRUARY 2003
DISCOVERY HEALTH REVISES MOTORSPORT EXCLUSIONS
MSA
published an Official Notice in its Oct-Dec 2002 Bulletin that
Discovery Health had advised (as per page 60 of the Discovery
.Summer 2002. Issue 14 magazine), that the exclusion of .health
care services relating to injuries sustained during
participation in professional sport, speed contests, speed
trials and extreme activities. had been added and would be
applicable from 1 January 2003. Consequently, motorsport
competitors have been acquiring medical insurance via MSA and
its insurers when renewing their licences. However, as
recently as 6 February 2003, in a complete turnabout, Discovery
Health advised that the exclusion for health care services
relating to extreme activities, speed contests and speed trials
within South Africa, has been removed, with the exception of
professional sport. This means that Discovery will in fact
cover health care services for injuries sustained by motorsport
competitors within South Africa.s borders. As a result of
factors outside of its control, MSA is now in the difficult
position of not being able to refund medical insurance premiums
which have already been collected, as these have been paid over
to the insurers, and certain motorsport events have taken place
. Competitors should however remember that Discovery Health
cover for other family dependants could be jeopardized in the
event of the competitor sustaining serious motorsport injuries
and depleting the amount of cover available to the family unit
for health services.
